Jessie Benton Evans paintings

Southwestern Landscapes: Black Mesa

New Mexico landscapes, acrylics: "This painting is in the collection of the National Museum of Women’s Art in Washington, DC. We stayed in Santa Fe into late fall when the days were shorter and the landscape golden and grey. Outside of Espanola, between Santa Fe and Taos is a landmark mountain called Black Mesa. I liked the rhythms of the circular road, the luminous distant mesas, banks of clouds, the monumentality and space. What accents the whole picture is the inset of bright blue sky, which at the horizon is often turquoise. This was tough to paint because I was cold, but I was pleased with the results."
