Jessie Benton Evans paintings

Southwestern Landscapes: Cloud Shadows

"Coming to her paintings is like coming to an oasis... (Like) Charles Burchfield, but the symbolism is more revved up. She approaches William Blake."

Sales Information
Landscapes, acrylics. "This painting looks north from Cave Creek, Arizona. The cloud shadows undulating across the land in patterns of light and dark fascinated me because they dipped in and out of the arroyos and canyons, following the contours of the land formations. I never know quite how my paintings will turn out. This became quite stylized. The clouds and earth are literally a frame for the shape of blue sky in the center. The dark cloud and rain at the right looked like 'grumpy' shapes. Try as I could at the time, I couldn't seem to modify them enough to change this mood, so finally left them."
