Jessie Benton Evans paintings

Southwestern Landscapes: Reflections

"Coming to her paintings is like coming to an oasis... (Like) Charles Burchfield, but the symbolism is more revved up. She approaches William Blake."

Landscapes, acrylics. "At my father's ranch in Tubac, Arizona, 20 miles north of Mexico, was a pond which attracted numerous water birds and hundreds of frogs.
At night, we watched javelina (wild pigs) and even pumas come to drink.
To the west, the Tumacacori Mountains twisted, with clouds banked against them. Monsoons from Mexico in mid-summer make the land very green. I was drawn to the freshness and sparkling quality, the magic of the double image of the cloud reflections and the sliver of mid-day moon in the sky. As I painted at the edge of the pond in the afternoon, frogs croaked and dragonflies glided above the water, and a gentle breeze made everything seem right with the world."
