"All of these still-lifes have a centering effect which the other objects support, or from which they radiate. I set these still-lifes up on an intuitive rather than intellectual basis, adding colorful floral fabric to create a setting of artistic, expressive and poetic richness. Color is a key element. I have often used moons and stars as backgrounds in still-lifes to bring the heavens and the spiritual into conjunction with the earthly. Pastry, while not nutritional, is pleasurable, having some equivalency with fruit as food or the 'sweet sustenance of life.' The bones and stones are elemental things that endure." |
