"In a smaller work, 'Rembrandt, Rubens and Sculpted Head,' details of Rembrandt’s 'The Jewish Bride' and a Rubens portrait of Helene Fourment seem to express Gray's tenderness as a husband and lover, standing guard against alternative visions of himself represented by van Gogh’s self-portrait with bandaged ear and a baroque disfigured head that Gray modeled out of Iowa clay."

"Behind the sculpted head is Rembrandt’s great painting, 'The Jewish Bride,' in color on the left, with a detail of the man's incredibly richly-painted arm in black and white on the right. The other paintings include a mother and child by Ruben's, Van Gogh's 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear,' and, I believe, an early American still-life. This acrylic painting epitomizes my use of art books as still-life objects, and the symbolic meanings that these art books can produce. This painting expresses much the same idea and feelings as my 'Renoir, Picasso and $5. Bill'. The solitary sculpted head links with that of Van Gogh, both contrasting with the couples’ warmth, whether that of mother and son or husband and wife. Interestingly, the sculpted head finds solace in its relationship with a still-life."
