"Visual beauty and poetic richness are major elements in this painting, but, like all paintings in the 'Berry' series, it is a remembrance of her shortly after her death. The moon is present, as in many of my works. I was attracted to bread, its form and probably as 'the staff of life.' When Berry died, I was painting still-lifes that were very organized, balanced and centered. This is evident with the bread and pepper in the middle, and an apple and onion on each side. I thought the pattern of the foreground cloth was extremely beautiful and expressive…and centered the pattern, which supports a central axis to the painting."
