Major, contemporary, timelessly realistic self-portraits. "This self-portrait was painted while I was teaching art at a college. While I didn’t often wear a tie, as I remember, I did on this occasion. I was struck by the beautiful red color of the shirt and orange, multi-colors of the tie, in relation, as it developed, to the palette. My art career has been spent nearly entirely in the search for visual and emotional reality in the world and how they can be significantly depicted. Therefore, it is not surprising that this painting is quite realistic. In addition to constructing the forms of the head, I explore and express the feelings and personality that emanate from me at that moment. They are deeply resonant against the blackness of the background."
